“I wrote this 3rd string quartet to explore new sounds including complex chords without any key signature, and textures that you would not find in traditional classical music. The goal is to tell a new story with something unexpected and mysterious. Where is this going? What will happen? As the piece progresses, you’ll begin to slowly recognize patterns, and a new landscape will emerge from the fog. Some sections in the middle are quite traditional sounding in terms of reassuring melodies and harmonies. Structurally, there are different sections but this piece is performed all in one movement so as to keep the story uninterrupted. This quartet takes the listener on an engaging journey into emotions of mystery, longing, warmth, and triumph, before the dramatic conclusion.” — Todd Mason
Todd Mason’s String Quartet No. 3 is in one continuous movement. This work blends tonal, polytonal and atonal material and requires music school to professional level players.
