This lyrical composition sets the work of Floyd Dell (“Actaeon” – 1908), Thomas Hardy (“The Man He Killed” – 1902), Eugene O’Neill (“Submarine” – 1917), and W.B. Yeats (“When You Are Old” – 1893). Composed for mezzo-soprano Michelle Monroe (who premiered and recorded this work), Four Songs is also available in a version with chamber orchestra. Four Songs is included on Beck’s 2023 recording, remember (neuma 183); the live premiere may be seen and heard here.
