“When I got the chance to play Kenneth Frazelle’s music,” notes Song, “I learned that he is also a watercolorist. His music sounds like his artwork—open, spacious, with an ambient acoustic and breathable texture. This piece is concise and economical, while still creating a transcendental, mystical, and transparent soundscape. It is like I am standing on a big, open hill and feeling the breeze when I play his music. In this busy life, Frazelle’s music brings me beauty, rest, and calm.”

Frazelle briefly shares the personal inspiration behind his new work. “My partner of 40 years died in May of 2022. Notes for Him was written afterwards, and dedicated to a dear friend whose presence and generosity helped me through tough times. The five movements explore elements of grief, humor, and joy, ending with a sustained peace. I’m thrilled that the composition will be premiered at the Rebecca Penneys Piano Festival. I attended the festival two summers ago, and was dumbstruck at the level of accomplishment and artistry of the participants.”
