String Trio for Violin, Viola, & Cello is a single-movement work but with several distinct sections including a fast paced and energetic opening, a slow and very emotional 2nd section, followed by an off-beat, lively waltz and, finally, a return to the rapid opening material. The harmonic language of this trio could be described as chromatic tonalism with a dissonant edge. Mason says: “The goal of this Trio is to take the listener on an emotional journey of discovery with lots of contrasts in harmony, rhythm and mood. Stylistically, there are perhaps echoes of Bartók and maybe Stravinsky in places but the point is to tell an engaging 21st Century musical story where new and unexpected things are always happening.”
