Clement: Vocalise for the Naked Emperor
$60.00
In Hans Christian Andersen’s folk tale, “The Emperor’s New Clothes”, two swindlers pose as tailors and offer to supply the emperor with elegant new clothes that are so magnificent that they are invisible to those who are stupid or incompetent. As the story proceeds, they produce a series of increasingly fabulous (and expensive) imaginary outfits which the emperor parades in the street… until a child states the obvious, that he’s got no clothes on at all. Reading the tale as a young person I was riveted to the idea of a succession of increasingly ornate imaginary garments. This music is organized like the story – in episodes, each reaching for more color, more exquisite moments than the prior, and ultimately begging a question.
The story and its message still speak to us today. In 2021 Greta Thunberg, a teen-age environmental activist, remarked that corporate reports on their carbon footprints are like the emperor’s new clothes – clever fraud made by crafty swindlers. She said, “But the facts do not lie. And we know that our emperors are naked.” Thank you, Greta!
