From November 17 -20, the Minnesota Opera hosted an orchestral workshop and reading of Paul Moravec’s new opera The Shining, conducted by music director Michael Christie. Based on Stephen King’s 1977 best-selling novel, the opera features a libretto by Mark Campbell and was commissioned by the Minnesota Opera as part of its New Works Initiative project.

Michael Christie offers an insider’s view into preparing this work new. “I am in awe of the creative process that yields a conductor’s score for a new work. Paul’s commitment to bringing King’s iconic novel to life through a vocal and instrumental medium is a wonder to behold. I applaud his inspiration and audacity! It has been fun and thoroughly consuming to work through a project as mammoth as The Shining in operatic form. Bravo Paul and Mark!”

The Shining receives its world premiere in May 2016 at The Ordway in Saint Paul, MN.
