On June 5-8, Composer in Residence James Lee III unveils the world premiere of his BSO-commissioned Concerto for Orchestra, channeling his own love of Baltimore in a daring and evocative new work.

Concerto for Orchestra is the last work of James to be commissioned and performed during his time as the Composer in Residence with the BSO for their 2024-2025 season. BSO Music Director Jonathon Heyward leads the dynamic program, which will also feature pianist Yefim Bronfman playing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 “Emperor.” This compelling program focuses on a strong sense of place, closing with Smetana’s patriotic tribute to his homeland, which solidifies his reputation as the “father of Czech music,” a rousing and lush ode to the rivers and mountains surrounding Prague, culminating in a triumphant hymn.
Admired for his “bright, pure music” (The Washington Post), with music described as “atmospheric and endlessly inventive” (Cincinnati Business Courier), James Lee III is the composer of more than 80 works for orchestra, chamber ensemble, piano, vocals, choral ensemble and more. Other exciting world premieres by the BSO and Jonathon Heyward this season included Lee’s Passport to Escapades, Deep River and his cello concerto “Renewed Mind,” which featured celebrated cellist Joshua Roman.
