Subito @ The Cone Institute

Composer Steven Mackey

“One of the valuable features of The Cone Institute is the annual visit from David Murray from Subito Music.” And so, award-winning composer Steven Mackey welcome’s Subito’s own Editor and Publishing Manager to participate in the New Jersey Symphony’s sixth season of the Edward T. Cone Composition Institute. Mackey directs the Cone Institute, which runs in partnership with the Princeton University Department of Music.

Since the Cone Institute’s inaugural season, Subito has participated in the rich and multifaceted program which promotes new orchestral music and emerging composers. Four composers will participate in the week-long session of professional development seminars, compositional consultations and rehearsals of their works. Composers will also hear their scores performed live–in-concert. David Murray will present the career development seminar on professional score preparation and music editing. Mackey adds, “David Murray tells us everything we want to know but were afraid to ask about music notation in general and as related to orchestra music in particular, where the stakes for accuracy are so high.”

This year’s Cone Institute runs from July 15 – 20, and culminates in the New Jersey Symphony’s performance of the composers’ works at Richardson Auditorium in Princeton. Cristian Măcelaru guest conducts. The 2019 Institute composers include: Dan Caputo (USC) with his work “Liminal;” Patrick O’Malley (USC) with his work “Rest and Restless;” Iván Enrique Rodríguez (Juilliard) with his work “A Metaphor for Power,” and Bora Yoon (Princeton) with her work “The Wind of Two Koreas.”
