Oboist Lisa Kozenko really enjoys Paul Moravec’s music!

So on August 8, she will present “Dialogues: New York Composer Paul Moravec and his Oboe Sextet,” as part of the 2014 International Double Reed Society Conference (IDRS) at New York University’s KimmelCenter. The lecture/recital will also draw attention to Moravec’s other chamber works which feature the oboe and bassoon including Useful Knowledge: A Franklin Fantasy, Andy Warhol Sez, Indialantic Impromptu (Woodwind Quintet), as well as highlight his Pulitzer Prize-winning Tempest Fantasy. Moravec will be on hand to participate in an informal chat; and, Kozenko will perform the Oboe Sextet joined by Orchestra of St. Luke’s ensemble-members violinists Anca Nicolau and Karl Kawahara, violist Louise Schulman, cellist Daire FitzGerald and double bassist Roger Wagner.

Moravec Oboe 6tet IDRS logoKozenko — an international soloist, chamber and orchestral musician (with 11 solo oboe and chamber commissions to her credit) and faculty member at the Bennington Chamber Music Conference and Mannes College The New School for Music — wanted to bring attention to Moravec’s music at the conference because “his music is expressive and energetic. The Sextet is the chamber music version of Paul’s Oboe Concerto that was premiered by the Lehigh Valley Chamber Orchestra and Humbert Lucarelli in 2006. [The original] concerto and Sextet are major contributions to the wind repertoire in the early 21st century….”

She continues, “Since the 2014 IDRS Conference is taking place in New York City, it is an excellent opportunity to present American double reed music that features New York composers, and to promote Paul’s works to the international community Moravec Oboe 6tet score image 2of wind players outside of the US. The [session] will be an exploration of the collaboration of composer and performing artist and what it means to give life to and bring new compositions into the oboe and bassoon repertoire. Paul’s music isn’t easy given what he requires of the performers and their instruments; but, it is conversational and it engages both the audience and the players. The session offers the perfect platform to discuss this type of composer/performer relationship and the dialogue that develops between the performing artist and audience. With his deep knowledge, Paul explores the sonic possibilities of wind instruments. In turn, he challenges and stretches the virtuosity of wind performers.”
