Composer Spotlight: Paul Moravec

What’s Composer Paul Moravec up to this Summer?

Paul MoravecPaul Moravec kicked off his busy summer itinerary at the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, where his 45-minute chamber work, The Time Gallery , was featured in John Kennedy’s Music in Time (MIT) Series. From South Carolina, the Pulitzer Prize-winner headed out to the mountains of New Hampshire, where he is currently serving a summer residency at the MacDowell Colony. During his residency, Moravec will finish composing a new band work, a multi-university consortium commission of the Southeastern Band Conductor’s Conference, and will premiere it in spring 2012.

While in New Hampshire, Moravec will also serve a week-long residency at the end of July for the Walden School in Dublin (NH). The Walden School Players, the Ensemble-in Residence for the Walden School’s Young Musicians Program, will perform Moravec’s The Time Gallery, along with several other works. On July 24, the composer will participate in a free public lecture/demo at the Walden School, where he will share his creative process along with recordings and excerpts of his work.

Moravec’s music will also be on the move throughout the busy summer months ahead. His piece “Losing My Mind” (based on Sondheim’s “I Think About You”) goes to the West Coast where Anthony de Mare will perform it at the Portland Piano International summer festival on July 12th. Moravec’s Pulitzer Prize-winning chamber work Tempest Fantasy will then be presented at the Garth Newel Center (Warm Springs, VA) on the 16th. July 18th will feature the exciting world premiere of Moravec’s new work, Deep Time, at the Aspen Music Festival in Colorado.

Next stop will be the Caramoor Festival in Katonah, NY, where Moravec’s Ariel’s Fantasy will be featured and performed by soprano Lauren Worsham and the Music from Copland House ensemble. And finally, in August it’s off to the Hamptons, where the Bridgehampton Music Festival will present the composer’s 2010 Wind Quintet .

Looking toward the future: Moravec has two new CDs in the works, slated for release by the end of the year. Stay tuned for more up-coming and exciting composer news!
