World Premiere of Roberto Sierra's "The Bacchae"

The Dallas Symphony Orchestra presented the world premiere of "The Bacchae" by Roberto Sierra, November 30, 2006 at The Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas. Commissioned by the DSO, the 15-minute tone poem portrays episodes from Euripides's tragedy: the arrival and rejection of Bacchus, the frenzy of his female followers, the murder of the Theban king Pentheus by his mother, Agave.

Scott Cantrell of the Dallas Morning News calls "The Bacchae" "vivid and high-energy music, in an expanded tonal language. Layerings of rhythmic busyness alternate with briefly reflective episodes, including a couple of rhapsodic violin solos. The orchestration favors bold colors and brilliant effects, and one passage suggests a busier 'Rite of Spring' ... DSO assistant conductor Danail Rachev's clear, precise gestures yielded a virtuoso performance."
